Mendoza
Mendoza is a Spanish sailor and skilled navigator (and only 28 years old according
to the French DVDs ^_^). Twelve years ago, Mendoza was part of Magellan's voyage
that sailed around the world. He even says that it was Magellan himself who
trained him as a navigator. During that expedition, Mendoza rescued the baby
Esteban from a sinking ship, but seemed to have lost track of him in the years
that followed. He rediscovers Esteban in a tavern in Barcelona, Spain and convinces
the boy to join him in his search for the Cities of Gold.
Mendoza is brave, cunning, and intelligent, a great fighter whose most dangerous
weapon is frequently his smooth tongue. He can talk his way into or out of almost
anything and seems to be willing to go to any lengths to find the Cities of
Gold. But, he does seem to genuinely care for the children often risking his
life to save them when it would be easier to leave them behind. The jury may
still be out on Mendoza, but I will always think of him as a hero.
