Esteban
Esteban is a twelve-year-old (according to the French DVDs) boy who has been
raised in the Cathedral of Barcelona by Father Rodriguez. But Father Rodriguez
is very ill and, in fact, dies in the first episode. But, he has an important
secret to tell Esteban on his death bed. Esteban was rescued in a fierce storm
from a sinking ship by Mendoza, a sailor in Magellan's Fleet. Esteban's father
gave his then infant son to Mendoza, but was unable to escape from the vessel
and was lost in the storm. When Mendoza, who by luck or destiny found Esteban
again, tells the boy that his father may still be alive somewhere across the
ocean, Esteban agrees to travel to the New World with him.
Esteban carries one of the Medallions of the Sun, the keys
to the Cities of Gold. He also has a strange power to command
the Sun, which he, himself, doesn't believe in. Later in the series,
he becomes the pilot of the Golden Condor.
Brave, loyal and kind-hearted, Esteban is the perfect young
hero. He is always ready for adventure but never forgets his friends,
Zia and Tao.
